Margaretting, Essex

This sign was erected to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. It sits by the side of the road, in front of a small village pond, and shows St Margaret and the church dedicated to her name.
The church, dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch in Pisidia, a popular Saint of the Middle Ages, was probably started in the 12th century. The earliest surviving wall dates from this time. There may have been an earlier church on the site, which is over a mile from the present village, but no trace now exists.
The parish is bounded on the east by the small river Wid, near which it has some rich meadows or ings, from which, and the patron saint of the church, it derived its name.
