Wollaston is bounded by the River Nene, and until comparatively recently, shoemaking was the major industry in the area, hence the prominence of the cobbler on the sign.

The ancient centre of the village, including Wollaston Hall, the 14thC towered church of St Mary’s and the partly mediaeval priory, is well-preserved and now forms the core of a Conservation area. Wollaston’s scheduled monuments include the site of a mediaeval manor house at the south end and, near the church, lies a circular mound about 10 metres high, surrounded by a ditch, which dates from the 12th Century. The mound is open to the public and nearby Wollaston Museum houses many artefacts from the village.

Irchester was once a Roman settlement, and this fact is reflected in the inclusion of a helmet in the Greco-Roman style on the village sign.

As the only known Roman road leaves the village in a southerly direction towards the crossing of the River Great Ouse at Turvey, It is thought that most transport and communication was carried out via the nearby River Nene.

An inscribed tombstone found in the village in 1853 (now in the British Museum) indicates that a ‘Strator Consularis’ was buried at Irchester, and large amounts of Roman Pottery have been found in the area.
